Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Project Manager to lead the delivery of a £1m+ decarbonisation programme for Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue Service. The programme comprises 5 projects across locations between Reading and Newbury, focusing on:
• Installation of VRF AC Systems
• Mechanical and electrical upgrades
• Building fabric improvements (primarily glazing)
• Builders and civils works
The role will be based across the RBFRS locations and at our Projects Office in Fareham when not onsite. The project duration is 7–8 months, with a strong pipeline of future work offering the opportunity to move onto other similar projects upon successful completion.
This role involves full project lifecycle responsibility, from mobilisation through to practical completion, including managing subcontractors, maintaining client relationships, and ensuring commercial and quality performance.
Key Responsibilities Include
(but not limited to):
• Act as the lead Project Manager overseeing multiple concurrent sites across Berkshire.
• Develop, manage, and maintain detailed project programmes using industry-standard tools
(e.g. MS Projects)
• Coordinate with RBFRS client representatives and key stakeholders to ensure alignment on
programme, phasing, access, and operational considerations.
• Procure, appoint, and manage specialist subcontractors across M&E, glazing, and civils
disciplines.
• Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress, quality, and H&S compliance.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks and communicate changes or issues proactively.
• Monitor and report on commercial performance in collaboration with the commercial team –
ensuring budgets, variations, and margins are actively managed.
• Manage project reporting including progress updates, risk registers, programme updates, and
completion documentation.
• Ensure RAMS, commissioning, and handover documentation are accurately compiled and
submitted.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
Essential:
• Experience managing complex M&E, HVAC or decarbonisation projects ideally in a live, public-sector environment.
• Strong technical knowledge of either mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems.
• Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and subcontractors.
• Proven ability to develop and manage project programmes.
• Excellent client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
• Commercial awareness throughout project lifecycles.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across Reading–Newbury region and to the
Fareham office.
Desirable:
• Experience with public sector frameworks or PSDS-funded decarbonisation projects.
• Knowledge of sustainability and low-carbon building technologies.
• SMSTS, CSCS Card, Asbestos Awareness, First Aid qualification.
• Experience working in operationally critical environments (e.g. fire stations, hospitals,
schools).
